Five Olympics Fun Facts

  1. The five Olympic rings represent the five regions of the world: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania.
  2. The Winter Olympics have never been hosted in the southern hemisphere, and three continents, Africa, South America, and Antarctica, have never hosted an Olympic games.
  3. Only four athletes have won medals at both the Winter and Summer Olympic games: Eddie Eagan of the United States, Jacob Tullin Thames of Norway, Christa Luding-Rothenburger of East Germany, and Clara Hughes of Canada.
  4. In the 1912 Stockholm games, Alfred Asikainen of Finalnd and Martin Klein of Russia competed for 11 hours in a Greco-Roman wrestling match. Klein won the semifinal match, but threw in the towel and settled for silver before the championship match due to exhaustion.
  5. In the 2012 London Olympic games, of the eight highest money-earning athletes competing, which includes salary as well as endorsement deals, five of them are members of the U.S. Olympic basketball team: Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James, Deron Williams, Chris Paul, and Kobe Bryant.
