Winito Athletics would like to congratulate Bremerton Quarterback, Mikey Lawrence, on the honor of being the West Sound Player of the Year. Lawrence passed for 1,932 yards, 18 touchdowns, and only four picks. He also rushed for 875 yards and 18 touchdowns.  He also had three interceptions while not even playing on defense full time. The feat is even more incredible when you consider that Lawrence had never player QB before this year. Lawrence was a running back coming into the year but was thrown under center after a series of unexpected departures left the Bremerton coaches scrambling to find a QB. What followed was one of the best individual and team seasons in Bremerton history with Lawrence leading the way to an Olympic League title. Lawrence will attend college at Central Washington University and is considering playing on the football team as a walk-on.

For 16 years, John Kitna was a Quarterback in the NFL.  He was a starter for the Bengals, Lions and Seahawks before finishing his career backing up Tony Romo with the Dallas Cowboys. After retiring at the end of the 2011 season, Kitna did something unexpected: he returned home to his alma mater; Lincoln High School in Tacoma Washington as the Head Football Coach and Algebra teacher for the the Lincoln Abes.  Coach Kitna has found success both on and off the field. Kitna has not only been successful as a coach, but also as a teacher. Kitna has helped students who previously had no interest in learning become model “A” students and his math class has the second highest GPA in the entire school. His effect on students is so powerful it has earned the nickname “The Kitna Effect” which is described as an ability to reach kids who other teachers have not been able to help. The school’s principal described this effect by telling CBS about the environment in Kitna’s math class, “When I went in to watch him teach, I saw kids who were doing math that I’ve seen sit in other classrooms and never lift a pencil.”  You can watch the inspirational video produced by CBS on the Lincoln Abes Football website powered by Winito Athleics here: www.LincolnGridiron.com (Second video on the home page)

Winito Athletics is proud to support John Kitna’s Lincoln Abes by providing them with a world-class website for their football program. Go Abes!

Geno Smith, selected 39th overall in the 2013 NFL draft, will be given an opportunity to compete with Mark Sanchez and Greg McElroy for the starting quarterback position this season. There has been a lot speculation on who the starter in will be in Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. So who will you see taking the opening snap? Mark Sanchez.

Due to his starting experience the Jets will start with Sanchez under center and follow a similar plan their week 1 rivals did when they drafted quarterback Josh Freeman in 2009; start a veteran until they feel comfortable enough putting the rookie into action. All things considered, the Bucs’ plan has worked quite successfully. Josh Johnson and Byron Leftwich started all games up to week 8 in the 2009 season allowing for current starter Josh Freeman to earn value game time lessons from the sideline and half a season of on field learning. Compare that to Mark Sanchez, who the Jets traded up to get in the same draft and are now desperately looking for other quarterback options.

Expect to see Geno Smith as the starting quarterback of the New York Jets by the end of the season. The Jets would do well by following the Bucs’ example by giving Smith the opportunity to learn from Sanchez or McElroy from the sideline before he is thrown into action. Due to their current quarterback situation, Smith will see many scenarios on how not to be an NFL quarterback in the NFL, which will be very beneficiary when he does go under center for the first time.

California’s Vista Murrieta High School will be sending senior standout safety Su’a Cravens to USC for the 2014 season. He was named by USA Today the 2012 top defensive player in the country and was regarded as the top safety recruit for the class of 2013. As a senior at Vista Murrieta, Craven recorded 97 tackles, 5 sacks, 4 deflections, 3 interceptions, and 3 blocked punts. On the offensive side of the ball he recorded 227 rushing yards with 6 touchdowns and 404 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns. Winito Athletics wishes Su’a Cravens the best in his collegiate career at USC!
